Tom Beatty is a candidate for the AMA Board of Directors
Tom Beatty asks for your support by nominating him for the AMA Board of Directors.
Tom Beatty a Charter Life Member of the AMA and a volunteer Field Rep has thrown his hat in the ring and is trying to get nominated for a try at getting elected to the American Motorcyclists Association (AMA) Board of Directors. If he can garner the needed votes which is to be one of the top three vote getters in the nominating period he will be in the election starting in January 2008. Below is the information he has provided in seeking your vote in the nominating period.
I would like to get the support of all AMA members in the Southeast Region 8 in my quest to become a board member of the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA). I am currently an AMA Charter Life Member and a Field Rep with the AMA. The AMA is a great organization and with the recent reorganization will become a better organization. The biggest complaint I have had with the organization is that the membership doesn't grow to the levels that I think are possible. The membership over the past few years has hovered in the 260,000 to 300,000 range. For a national motorcyclists organization I think this is a drop in the bucket as to what it should be. With the number of registered motorcycles in the state of Florida we should have that number in Florida alone. When fighting the legislative battles to preserve motorcycling as we know it the politicians look at the membership numbers of an organization since these translate into votes. So the more members we have the more clout we have with the politicians. So I ask for the support of the Southeastern AMA members to help me get nominated to the Board of Directors of the AMA. Below is the information on how to vote. The deadline for nominations is October 10, 2007 so it is important to act quickly to send in the nomination forms. If I receive enough votes to get on the ballot then I would also need your vote in the election which will be in January 2008. If anyone has any questions for me feel free to email me or call me.
I am seeking to be a candidate to serve on the Board of Directors of the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA). I have been a motorcyclist since my teens and am a Charter Life Member of the AMA and a volunteer Field Rep. If you are a member of the AMA I am asking for your assistance to get on the ballot. In order to do this I must get nominated by AMA members in good standing from my home region which is the Southeast Region and includes KY, VA, TN, NC, SC, GA, AL and FL. The top three nominees will appear on the ballot and a minimum of 25 nominations is required to appear on the ballot.
To nominate me you must use the official nominating ballot that is in the October 2007 issue of the American Motorcyclist magazine from the AMA. If you do not have your magazine or a ballot you may request one in writing from the AMA. Send your request to:
AMA/BALLOT
13515 Yarmouth Drive
Pickerington, OH 43147
Note that only official original ballots will be accepted. The deadline for nominations is October 10, 2007 so please don't delay send it right away. If you send a nominating ballot for me please email or call me to let me know. If you have any questions please email me or call me. My telephone number is 321-749-7933.
Thanks for your consideration of my candidacy. You can email me by clicking on my name:
Attorneys say Billy Lane blood samples may be tainted
Attorney Gregory Eisenmenger has filed motions calling for the blood sample evidence to be thrown out of the Billy Lane trial.
Attorneys contend state law enforcement authorities' poor handling of blood samples taken from motorcycle builder Billy Lane may have caused a false positive on a high blood-alcohol level. Gregory Eisenmenger attorney for motorcycle builder Billy Lane contend failure by police to refrigerate blood samples may have sparked bacterial growth that resulted in a false high blood-alcohol level reading against their client. He has also filed motions calling for the evidence to be thrown out because Lane did not consent to a Florida Highway Patrol blood draw at the hospital following the accident.
Police say Lane, 37, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.19, more than twice the legal limit, when he crossed a double yellow line on State Road A1A to pass several vehicles and struck 56-year-old Sebastian Inlet park ranger Gerald Morelock's Yamaha mini-motorcycle head-on with his Dodge Ram pickup. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted at his trial, expected to begin in early 2008. A pretrial conference hearing is scheduled before Circuit Judge Meryl Allawas for 9 a.m. Oct. 10. Eisenmenger said he expects to ask for a continuance that day in order to schedule a full day for his motions to be heard.
A Morelock family civil suit against Lane seeking compensation for hospital and funeral bills was settled in July for an undisclosed amount.
CanAm GNCC Racing in Vero Beach
Grand National Cross Country racing series in Vero Beach for the first time.
Sunday March 4th the Corrigan Ranch in Vero Beach played host to the Triton, which is the first of 13 rounds in the Grand National Cross Country Racing Series. The event corresponds with "Bike Week" in Daytona Beach. "We were trying to find the best location so we were close to Daytona for "Bike Week" but not too close that it is too hard for people to find hotels and get around in traffic," GNCC spokesman Jason Weigandt said. "Vero Beach has good terrain, good weather, a good facility to hold the race, but is not too far from Daytona that people can't make it down to see the races." A total of 64 races will take place between ATV and Motorcycle racing on Sunday and Tuesday, with Sunday being the four-wheel ATV races and Tuesday being for dirt bikes. Saturday and Monday are practice days.
The track will be 10-12 miles in and out of wooded areas around the property. The pro races will run for about three hours, going about 70 miles total.
Senate Bill to outlaw Radar Detectors

GNCC Racing comes to Vero Beach
The CanAm GNCC Racing Series comes to Vero Beach March 3-6.
The CanAm Grand National Cross Country Racing Series makes it's debut in Vero Beach March 3rd through the 6th with the Triton GNCC. For the past two years the GNCC events were held in De Leon Springs. The move to Vero Beach is to an all-new GNCC track just over an hour south of the madness of Daytona Bike Week, the Triton GNCC is hosted in the expansive Corrigan Ranch. This track should provide a return to more traditional GNCC conditions than the previous Florida race, which was wide-open and whooped out. This track will feature sand and whoops, too, but it also has some trees and roots which will help slow things down. As with all of the other GNCCs held in Florida, though, sand is the main ingredient here, and that means it will get rough and whooped out. Find a way to get your hands ready for this one, or you'll be full of blisters before the next race in Georgia.
Bart Markel Passes
Three-time AMA Grand National champ dies in his hometown of Flint, Michigan.
Long considered one of the greatest racers in AMA dirt track history, three-time AMA Grand National Champion Bart Markel died at his home in Flint, Michigan, Saturday February 3, 2007 at the age of 71. Markel's final national win came in Columbus, Ohio, on June 27, 1971 - his 28th career AMA national victory. At the time, that win broke the record for most wins, previously held by Joe Leonard at 27. Markel's record of 28 Grand National wins stood until 1982 when Jay Springsteen earned his 29th victory at the Houston Astrodome. Markel competed in more than 140 AMA Grand National Series races before his retirement in 1971 and he was inducted into the AMA's Hall of Fame in 1998. Markel was born in Flint, Michigan, on August 19, 1935.

Dave Genchi Recovery Fund Fundraiser
Fundraiser for local photographer and videographer Dave Genchi February 17th
Dave Genchi a local photographer and videographer was injured in a snowboarding accident in Colorado on December 21st. Dave is well known in the area for his photo's and video's documenting surfing and soccer events and activities. Most recently he has been using his talents to capture snow skiing and snowboarding activities in Colorado for Steamboat Powdercats. Dave was snowboarding on his job as photographer with Steamboat Powdercats, in Steamboat Springs CO, on December 21 with the Powdercat guides when he tried to make a surf turn on what turned out to be a thin layer of snow on a large rock. The thin layer of snow did not allow the
snowboard to grip in the turn and Dave became airborne landing on his head and shoulder. Thankfully his helmet, which was cracked in the fall, appears to have prevented head injuries. He does appear to have spinal cord injuries, but it is too soon to tell if there
will be lasting effects, or what they will be. Dave was fortunate to be with his friends from Steamboat Powdercats who are all well
trained to deal with ski and snowboard injuries, and they got him off the mountain quickly. Dave had surgery at the Level 1 trauma unit
of St Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, CO to repair damage to cervical vertebrae and is currently in rehab at Craig Hospital in Englewood, CO.
A fundraiser for Dave's recovery fund is being held on February 17th at Ryckman Park in Melbourne Beach. Head down to the park with the entire family for an afternoon of fun, food, music and movies to support our local friend, Dave Genchi on his road to recovery. Three local bands, "New School Dropouts", "The Groves", and "New Gravity" will be performing. After dark movies from Dave's collection will be shown including surfing movies and Dave's award winning snowboarding video "Boat Trippin'". The event is from 3-10PM. View Dave's website and some of his work HERE. View an article about Dave's recovery in the Steamboat Springs, CO newspaper HERE. For information on the fundraiser go to Dave Genchi Fundraiser

Fuel the Fund
Join the AMA in raising matching funds for a motorcycle crash study.
The federal government has pledged up to $2.8 million to fund a comprehensive study of motorcycle crashes, something that hasn't been done in 25 years. But the funding calls for a 50 percent match from us. That means we need to raise $2.8 million of our own to take full advantage of the federal funding. The AMA believes so strongly in this effort that they’ve committed $100,000 immediately to the project. They’re asking companies in the industry to pledge money as well, and it looks like they're coming through. If you would like to help Fuel the Fund click HERE.
Carmichael named AMA SPEED Athlete of the Year
No one in the history of the sport of AMA Supercross and Motocross has accomplished as much. And it's entirely possible that no one will again. So it was only fitting that none other than Suzuki factory pilot Ricky Carmichael took the top honor in Las Vegas Sunday at the AMA Pro Racing Awards Banquet, taking home the coveted AMA SPEED Athlete of the Year Award in a hall packed with his peers, fellow champions and industry luminaries. Topping a list of nominees that included flat-tracker and world's fastest motorcyclist Chris Carr, AMA Formula Xtreme Champion Josh Hayes, AMA Superbike Champion Ben Spies and Motocross Lites Champion Ryan Villopoto, Carmichael is the GOAT--the greatest of all time in AMA Toyota Motocross. The award caps an all-conquering career by Carmichael, who retires from racing for the championship this year but will continue to run a limited schedule for 2007. Read about the award HERE.

Former motocross racer Jim Pomeroy dies in car crash
August 7, 2006
YAKIMA, Wash. -- Jim Pomeroy, the first U.S. motorcycle racer to win a World Championship Motocross event, was killed in a car accident. He was 53.
Pomeroy died Sunday morning when his 1979 Jeep CJ5 went off the road near Tampico, about 20 miles west of his hometown of Yakima, hit a telephone pole wire and landed on its side, the Washington State Patrol said. His 9-year-old daughter, Jamie, was treated for minor injuries at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital and released, the troopers said in a news release.
The accident apparently was caused by driver inattention, investigators added.
Pomeroy was 20 when he became the first rider to win his debut world championship motocross, the Spanish Grand Prix in 1973. He was also the first U.S. racer to win a world Grand Prix event.
"Up until that point, the Europeans dominated the world in the sport of motocross or motorcycling," said Bill Grubin, owner of Grubin and Co., a Yakima motorcycle shop. "Once Jim Pomeroy won that race, he changed the face of motorcycling in the United States forever."
Pomeroy won many other top races before retiring from the tour in 1980. He then worked with young riders at motocross schools to help the United States dominate the sport's scene. In 1999, the American Motorcyclist Association inducted him into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame. He was Grand Marshall for the 2002 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days in Lexington, OH.
Pomeroy came from a long line of motocross racers, including his father, Don Pomeroy, who owned Pomeroy Cycle Shop in Sunnyside and Yakima before his death last year.
He is also survived by his wife Linda. To donate to the "JIM POMEROY MEMORIAL FUND BENEFITING JAMIE LEE POMEROY" click HERE.

Giacomo Agostini to be Grand Marshall for Vintage Motorcycle Days.
Giacomo Agostini (born 16 June 1942, Brescia, Lombardy), nickname Ago. He won a record 122 grand prix and 15 world titles. Agostini, who was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999, is considered the greatest Grand Prix rider of all time. In just 17 years he won 15 world Grand Prix titles, 12 Isle of Man TT crowns, and 122 Grand Prix events. He brought unprecedented recognition to the Daytona 200 when he won the race in 1974.
Agostini cut his teeth on hill climb events aboard a Morini 175 Settebello. Morini subsequently offered him a place in their works team and having replaced Provini in '64, he began to attract a good deal of general attention. MV soon spotted this rising star and they gave him a World Championship ride as under study to Mike Hailwood, from whom Agostini swore he learned a great deal. A compliment indeed for Agostini was not a man given to easy compliments. The new boy did extremely well on the massive fours of the early days, but "his" bike - arguably the machine made for him - was the the 350cc three cylinder which he was to ride to a splendid victory at the Nurburgring on its very first outing in 1965. This was followed shortly afterwards by the 500cc three and "Ago" was thus provided with the machines with which he was to carve out his own legend. After having narrowly missed his first World Championship success in '65, Agostini was left alone to defend the MV colours in the '66 season when Hailwood signed for Honda. With the 350 he was twice runner up to his ex team-mate in 1966 and 1967, but he got his own back with a vengeance in the 5000 class where both of these seasons were illuminated by a thrilling series of duels between the two rivals. In both '66 and '67 the final result was in doubt until the last round of the season, the GP of Nations at Monza, and on both occasions the Italian champion carried the day.
Honda departed the scene at the end of the '67 season, the famous "easy years" began for Agostini, except perhaps the splendid clashes with the Benelli mounted fellow Italian; Rezo Pasolini. The majority of these duels took place in the domestic Italian championships. In the world championships, Ago and the MV dominated as win followed win in an apparently endless sequence. It was not until the middle of the 1971 season when a young rider from Finland arrived on the scene riding his own two stroke Yamaha's; Jarno Saarinen started to upset the long domination of Agostini and 350cc MV combination. It looked as if things were all set for fireworks in the '73 season as Saarinen now a works Yamaha rider, and equipped with a very potent 500cc to challenge Ago in the premier class. After winning the first two rounds of the 500cc tragedy struck at the third round at Monza. Saarinen was killed along with Renzo Pasolini in a horrendous pile up during the 250cc race. This left MV and Ago once again in a commanding position, but the factory decided to recruit Englishman Phil Read to ride as team-mate to Agostini and assist the development of a new four cylinder model earmarked to replace the glorious but obsolescent three cylinder. Agostini went onto win the 350cc title but had to bow to Read who took the 500cc championship. A fact that doubtless hardened his resolve to abandon MV all those successful years in favor of Yamaha, for the following season. Agostini made his U.S. racing debut in the Daytona 200 in March of 1974. The race that year was loaded with talent, including Kenny Roberts and Barry Sheene, as well as all the top U.S. riders. Agostini led early, but then had to battle Sheene, Roberts and Gary Nixon. For half the race, the quartet staged some of the most exciting laps ever turned in the 200 (that year reduced to 180 miles due to the oil crisis). Eventually, the other three riders fell by the wayside due to bike problems or crashes and Agostini rode to victory in his first attempt at Daytona. However, Agostini was destined to return to the marque he had ridden for so long, in 1976. He scored the Italian companies last GP victories in the 350 and 500 class competition, at the the Dutch GP at Assen and at the Nurburgring respectively. The latter was a truly fitting venue because it was at the Nurburgring that Agostini had first come to the fore back in 1965 and it was there that he made his victorious curtain call with the marque that had given him so much.
Ago has been selected to be Grand Marshall at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days on July 28-30, and will be held at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course near Lexington, Ohio.

Jackpot Cruiser headlines announcements from Victory.
A new variation of the Jackpot cruiser headlines the 2006 new-model announcements from Victory Motorcycles, and all but one of the 2006 Victory models now have the 100/6 Freedom V-twin engine introduced last year in the Hammer.
Victory calls the Vegas Jackpot a "combination of America custom-shop styling and outstanding power" and "an extreme custom cruiser." It starts out as a Vegas—with that bike's 21-inch front wheel, raised spine styling element running from front fender to rear through the tank, and scalloped fuel tank with its split tail—and adds the chunky 250mm-wide rear tire of the Hammer, a streamlined chrome-over-bodywork-color headlight with an HID element, detachable passenger seat, frame color-matched to the bodywork, and its own swoopy fender and fender-rail designs. Pricing starts at $17,499 suggested for black. Victory positions the Jackpot as a competitor to full customs built by small shops.
Except for the Touring Cruiser, which uses the old-style chassis, all of Victory's 2006 models get the Freedom 100/6 V-twin power train. That's the 1634cc displacement with six speeds. It also is a bit narrower than the old 1530cc, five-speed engine (which is still used in the Touring Cruiser). The big six-speed engine is still used in the Hammer (which starts at a suggested $16,899), and also powers the Kingpin ($15,999 suggested base), the Vegas ($15,799), the Vegas 8-Ball ($13,399) and the Deluxe version of the Kingpin ($17,499), the Kingpin equipped with a windshield, a touring saddle, saddlebags, and backrest and floorboards for the passenger.
This year Victory will also offer two limited-edition versions of the Jackpot styled by Arlen and Cory Ness. These 2006-only bikes add extensive billet and chrome, special billet wheels, custom stitched seats, special signed Ness graphic treatments to the basic Jackpot. The Cory Ness Signature model has black bodywork with blue flames, black frame and black engine. The Arlen Ness Signature bike has is has blue bodywork and frame with gold and silver graphics and the silver engine. Either version is $21,999.
The local Victory dealer is Ferrara's Victory on south Wickham Road.
